Gambling Recovery: Taking Back Your Life
Community work

Meetings, advocacy and volunteering

A man I barely knew drove more than an hour to spend Easter with him because he knew Jimmy was alone. That is the standard he is trying to meet.

Chairing Gamblers Anonymous meetings

I attend weekly and chair regularly. Fourteen years in, the rooms are still the thing that keeps me free, not something I graduated from.

Sponsoring and mentoring

I sponsor people in early recovery, including guests who first reached out after hearing an episode. One of them, Joey, was 27 and in inpatient treatment when his parents found their first meeting.

Conference workshops

Multiple workshops presented at problem gambling conferences, plus work behind the scenes helping organise conferences and events.

Community centre talks

Talks at community centres and recovery focused events about what gambling addiction actually looks like and what it does to a family.

Service inside the fellowship

The unglamorous part. Setting up rooms, answering calls, driving to meetings, and showing up for people on the days they cannot show up for themselves.

Giving people a platform

Through the podcast, people with lived experience, families, clinicians, researchers and advocates get somewhere to put their story and their expertise.

Where the work happens

The rooms and the studio

Framed on the studio sideboard: all you can take with you is that which you have given away.
